Tai Chi authenticity questioned after MMA fighter K.O.

Video of reportedly the first match between traditional martial arts and modern combat in nearly 60 years in China has prompted heated online debate.

The footage shows a battle between a master of the Taoist martial art, Tai Chi, and a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter and has raised questions about the authenticity of traditional martial arts.

Xu Xiaodong, a Beijing-based MMA fighter is seen to bring Wei Lei, a Tai Chi master to the ground in about 10 seconds at a martial arts gym in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province on Friday.

Wei received multiple blows to his head before being lifted up by staff standing on the sidelines.

This, according to media reports, was the first ‘match’ between traditional martial arts and modern combat in nearly 60 years in China, and was prompted by an ongoing public ‘dispute’ between the two, thecover.cn reports.

41-year-old Wei bragged on social media that he could tackle the ‘rear naked choke,’ a chokehold in MMA martial arts, with a single hand provoking Xu’s scorn, according to thecover.cn.

37-year-old Xu said Wei had said many “horrible things” and told a lot of lies about martial arts on TV, so he told the public that what Wei said was fake.

Netizens challenged him to ‘put up or shut up’ and so he decided to fight a duel with Wei to prove his point.

The event has prompted many to question the authenticity of traditional Tai Chi, criticizing it as being weak or even “a deceit”, and netizens have taunted Wei for being a “fraud”, according to media reports.

In an interview with the Chinese media, Bai Jiahao, after the match Wei said he is only a “primary school student” in the world of Tai Chi and cannot represent anyone, as there are on thousands upon thousands of people practicing traditional martial arts.

He said people have misunderstood the ancient Taoist martial art. “The martial arts that we have been practicing do not conform to the pattern of this world and modern competitive sports, but we are not lying.”

He also agrees that most people practice Tai Chi for the health benefits these days.

Tang Luo, general manager of a famous fight club in Chengdu, told thecover.cn that the match was between two individuals and it didn’t mean that MMA had ‘defeated’ traditional martial arts.

Tang said he personally believes there has been too much ‘performing’ in traditional martial arts and a lack of practicality.”
